Gregorio Luke is an expert on Mexican and Latin American art and

culture. He is the former Director of the Museum of Latin American

Art, Consul of Cultural Affairs of Mexico in Los Angeles and the First

Secretary of the embassy of Mexico in Washington D.C.

Mr. Luke has given over 1,000 Lectures in museums and universities in

Mexico, Europe and the United States. He has spoken at institutions

such as The Library of Congress, The Smithsonian Institution, the San

Diego Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Art, and universities such as

Harvard, Columbia and Georgetown among others.

In 1995 he was conferred the Irving Leonard Award by the Hispanic

Society of the Library of Congress. In 2005 The Ebell of Los Angeles

honored him with the Life Achievement Award, 2006 he received the

El Angel Award by the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts and in 2007 he

was recognized by CATE (California Association of Teacher’s in

English) for promoting literacy in public schools. In 2008 he was

recipient of the KCET Local Heroes Award.

Promoted the presentation in Los Angeles of some of Mexico's most prestigious intellectuals and

writers, such as CARLOS FUENTES, ALBERTO BELTRAN, LUIS ORTIZ MACEDO, RAIL

CARDIEL, BEATRIZ DE LA FUENTE and CARMEN RAMOS among others.

 

Directed promotion and fund raising efforts to present plays and performances such as AGUILA

REAL, the TALLER COREOGRAFICO DE LA UNAM and BETSY PECANINS

Worked closely with other Latin American consulates in events such as the Latino Book and

Cultural Festival.

Coordinated the outreach program of the consulate of Mexico in Los Angeles, bringing lectures

and exhibits on Mexican culture to more than 40,000 Los Angeles public school students.

 

Collaborated with Museums such as the LA COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART, THE SOUTH WEST

MUSEUM, and THE GENE AUTRY MUSEUM and very especially with the MUSEUM OF

LATIN AMERICAN ART, where he offered lectures and brought exhibits such as TIME AND

COLOR of Diego Rivera.

 

1993-1996  DEPUTY DIRECTOR MEXICAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE IN

WASHINGTON, DC

Founding member of the MEXICAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE, Secretary of its Board of

Directors. In 1994 was promoted to Deputy Director. In this capacity, he initiated the musical

series of the institute. Designed a film and lecture program, organized exhibits and participated on

the Symposium on the educational implications of North America Free Trade Agreement

(NAFTA).

 

1989-1992  FIRST SECRETARY EMBASSY OF MEXICO IN WASHINGTON, DC

Responsible for educational issues. Participated in bilateral meetings. Coordinated visits and high

level meetings between Mexican Government Officials and their US counterparts. Designed

information package on Mexico for US schools as well as art and educational exhibits of Mexico

in organizations such as the World band, the Organization of American States and the

International Development bank. Organized film festivals of Mexican movies in the library of

Congress, the American Film Institute. Curated the exhibit "New visions of Mexico" at the Martin

Luther King Library.

Nacional Financiera is Mexico's most important Development bank. Planned and organized all

socio cultural events: 150 music, dance and theater events; 115 screenings of films; 66 cultural

excursions to archaeological and colonial sites; 43 recitals; 12 exhibits and 26 lectures.

Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM is Mexico's foremost contemporary Ballet Company. Directed

press, fundraising and promotional campaigns, managed national and international tours.

Increased membership by more than 200%. Organized three international competitions of

painting, poetry and photography of dance.

Conducted all day seminars on Mexican culture for US diplomats posted in Mexico; also lead

Kahlo and Diego Rivera at the Smithsonian Institution, a four week course on Mexican music,

dance art and cuisine at the Library of Congress, conferences on Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz,

Mexican Art and Mexican Film at the Johns Hopkins University. Coordinated seminars on

Archaeology of Mexico and the Mayan World for the Resident Associate Program at the

Smithsonian with some of the worlds most distinguished archaeologists such as George and David

Stuart, Michael Coe, Roberto Garcia Moll, Dorie Teents Budet, Richard Diehl and Elizabeth

Boone.

 

EDITORIAL WORK

Author of forty articles on International themes that were published by EL NACIONAL, Mexican

Director del Museo de Arte Latinoamericano 1999 -2007

Durante su gestión, el Museo de Arte Latinoamericano, se convirtió en una de las instituciones más importantes en su tipo en los Estados Unidos.

Recabó más de siete millones de dólares de fundaciones y corporaciones

Norte Americanas en la campaña para crear las nuevas instalaciones del museo. Organizó más de cincuenta exposiciones de artistas de América Latina entre ellos, Diego Rivera, Fernando Botero, Jesús Soto, Francisco Toledo, Fernando de Szyszlo y José Luis Cuevas, entre otros. Impulsó un ambicioso programa de artes escénicas, actividades educativas, encuentros internacionales y publicaciones.

 

􀀀 1996-98 Agregado Cultural, Consulado General de México en Los Ángeles, California.

Organizó un programa de difusión de la cultura mexicana en escuelas públicas para más de 40.000 estudiantes de Los Ángeles.

Promovió la presentación de intelectuales y escritores como Carlos Fuentes, Alberto Beltrán, Luis Ortiz Macedo, Raúl Cardiel, Beatriz de la Fuente y Carmen Ramos, entre otros y exposiciones diversas.

 

􀀀 1989-1996 Primer Secretario. Embajada de México en Washington y Subdirector del Instituto Cultural Mexicano

Coordinó actividades culturales, exposiciones, seminarios y ciclos de cine en las principales instituciones culturales norteamericanas como, El Smithsonian, La Biblioteca del Congreso, El Kennedy Center (Centro Kennedy) y La Biblioteca Martin Luther King. Miembro fundador del Instituto Cultural Mexicano, donde fue subdirector y coordinó un amplio número de exposiciones, conciertos, conferencias, ciclos de cine, etc. Coordinó un exitoso programa de difusión cultural en las escuelas públicas afroamericanas del Distrito de Columbia. Por estos esfuerzos recibió el premio Embassy Adoption Program (Programa de Adopción de la Embajada) y fue reconocido por el gobierno del Distrito de Columbia. Coordinó seminarios en arqueología de México y el mundo Maya, ha presentado a distinguidos arqueólogos como George y David Stuart, Michael Coe, Roberto García Moll, Dorie Reents Budet, Richard Diehl y Elizabeth Boone.

 

􀀀1984-1989. Director de Fomento Cultural de Nacional Financiera.

Planeó y organizó todos los eventos culturales de Nacional Financiera, el Banco de desarrollo más importante de México. Se presentaron más de 150 eventos de música, danza y teatro, así como 115 películas, 65 excursiones culturales, 12 exposiciones y 26 conferencias.

Las conferencias han sido presentadas en instituciones, museos, universidades y agencias gubernamentales de EU incluyendo: la Biblioteca del Congreso, El Instituto Smithsonian, El Dpto. de Estado, el Dpto. de Trabajo, el Dpto. Del Tesoro, la Galería Corcoran en Washington D.C. el Instituto de Arte de Detroit, el Museo de las Américas, la Organización de Estados Americanos, el Museo de Arte de Phoenix, y las Universidades de Harvard, Columbia, John Hopkins, Georgetown, UCLA, USC, y UC Berkely. Ha presentado también conferencias en foros nacionales como el Concilio Nacional para la Raza, NABE, CABE y la Asociación de Museos Norte Americanos. O Norteamericanos En Mexico presentó su espectáculo Murales Bajo las Estrellas en la Explanada de Bellas Artes  así como en espacios de importancia como el Anfiteatro Simón Bolívar del Colegio de San Ildefonso, el paraninfo de la Universidad de Guadalajara y el Centro Cultural Tijuana entre otros.  

Desde el 2005 es jurado y conferencista de la  Bienal de Florencia y desde el 2012 de la Bianal Internacional de Argentina 

 

TELEVISIÓN Y RADIO

 

Es conductor y director del Programa semanal ENCUENTROS de KPFK y colaborador frecuente en temas culturales en Univision y Telemundo.

En 2004 creó el programa de televisión DENTRO DEL ARTE que se trasmitió

por el canal 11 de México y Direct TV en los Estados Unidos.

La serie incluyó programas sobre instituciones como el Centro Getty, el Museo LACMA, la Sala de Conciertos Disney, la Nueva Catedral de Los Ángeles, la Plaza Olvera, y la Plaza México entre otros.Entrevistó a artistas como Edward James Olmos, Enrique Arturo Diemecke,Gloria Contreras y Placido Domingo entre otros. Preparó también programas especiales sobre las comunidades mexicanas que radican en California.
